Political comedy based on 1990s Britain to play at Trafalgar Studios

Education, Education, Education

It has been announced that the Wardrobe Ensemble’s award-winning play Education, Education, Education will play at Trafalgar Studio One for a limited engagement.

Set at the turn of the 1997 general election with Tony Blair assuming the role of Prime Minister, the play gives a comedic look into the education system over 20 years ago. As a German language assistant Tobias moves to the UK to teach at a local secondary school, his assimilation is challenged by a political revolution where special measures inside and outside of the classroom are questioned.

Education, Education, Education was first performed in 2017 at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, with the play winning a Scotsman Fringe First Award and The Stage’s Edinburgh Award. The upcoming production will mark the show’s West End transfer.

Initial casting has also been announced, with James Newton playing the role of Tobias, a German language assistant. He is joined by Jesse Meadows as Susan Belltop-Doyle and Ben Vardy as Tim Pashley, secondary school teachers who greet Tobias at his new job. Tom Brennan will play Paul McIntyre, Emily Greenslade will play Emily Greenslade and Tom England will play Hugh Mills.

Further casting is to be announced.

In a review for The Stage for the 2017 Edinburgh production, Natasha Tripney said Education, Education, Education is "time-capsule theatre that is far more than just an exercise in nostalgia as the company gently subverts expectations in the way it deploys the iconic imagery and songs of the era."

The Wardrobe Ensemble are a Bristol based theatre company, which was formed in 2011. Comprised of nine actors, a producer and associate artists who work in conjunction with the company, the Wardrobe Ensemble have created shows for audiences of all ages, including RIOT, 1972: The Future of Sex and Eliza and the Wild Swans.

Education, Education, Education is at Trafalgar Studio One from 31st May to 29th June.
